History of Middlefield Market

By the early 1950’s, under the name of Geauga Livestock Commission, this property was the premier livestock auction facility in Geauga County.  Geauga County was a farming community, with acres and acres devoted to dairy farming.  Serving the local cheese houses and regional commercial dairies, these farmers required a facility to sell excessive livestock and farm products and to purchase livestock and products not raised on their farms.  Geauga Livestock Commission filled those needs with regularly scheduled auctions selling horses, cows, steers, hogs, piglets, eggs, chickens, ducks, goats, sheep and the tools of the trade.  More importantly, it was the weekly social gathering place of neighbors and friends.

As the community egressed from farming to manufacturing, the need for a livestock auction diminished.   A transformation of the property from the livestock of Geauga Livestock Commission to the retail facility of Middlefield Market occurred in the late 1980’s.  But, this remains the weekly gathering place of the community.  Continuing the auction tradition, Middlefield Market hosts the Country Line Auction and Flea Market every Monday, all year round.Friends and neighbors still are heard to say, “See you Monday at the sale!”
